Cathy's dream of owning a horse farm began when she was just a horse crazy little girl as she played with Breyer model horses, and set up miniature farms for them in her bedroom. Over the next 20 years, she focused much of her energy on that dream, spending most of her time and passion riding horses. Her experience training with many talented instructors, riding a huge variety of difficult as well as made horses, and showing in hunter/jumpers, dressage, and eventing, put a career in horses within reach. Through the years Cathy gained valuable teaching and riding experience while working at a number of different farms all over the United States, managing show barns, running riding lesson programs, teaching up to 60 riders a week, as well as training and showing green and made horses. Smokey Hollow Farm was established in the Asheville area in 2004, and quickly grew into a thriving training, lessons, and sale business. In 2007 Cathy purchased a perfect slice of paradise, which is Smokey Hollow Farm's current location in Tryon, North Carolina. Smokey Hollow Farm is a truly a dream turned reality.

Throughout the years, many trainers have influenced Cathy's riding and understanding of training horses and riders. A few of the experts that have helped shaped Cathy's riding, training, and teaching style are eventing Olympians Jimmy Wofford and Dorothy Trapp Crowell, and Advanced Level event riders Diana Rich, Amy Barrington, Annie Lane-Maunder, Peter Atkins, and Beth Perkins. She has also focused on dressage, taking lessons and clinics with Grand Prix dressage trainers Jodi Lees, Jen Baumert, Joe Sandven, Robert Zandvoort, and Scott Hassler. Throughout her riding career, Cathy has taken lessons and clinics with many renowned hunter/ jumper trainers. Cathy currently continues her own education in all of these disciplines through ongoing lessons and by participating in clinics with top trainers that complement her riding and training methods.
